Thanks Wookie
I will check the voltage shortly. The battery is a week old.
The R/R is a used one. There must be a way to test it! I know Ed has said he has purchased several?!
Can you refresh my memory what is FSM ?
I forgot to ask in the first post. What size wires should I be running from the R/R to the battery? I think I'm running a 14 or 16 gauge. Too small!?

FSM = Factory Service Manual ( not Haynes, Clymer, et cetera)

Can you refresh my memory what is FSM ? Factory service manual
I forgot to ask in the first post. What size wires should I be running from the R/R to the battery? I think I'm running a 14 or 16 gauge. Too small!? 16 is definitely too small, 14 is marginal, I would use 12awg (see below for voltage drops for each size of cable)

I have installed two of those SH775 RR's on my bikes, I run #10AWG wire direct to the battery. On the positive side I run a 30A inline fuse between RR and battery.

Re: new to me 1978 KZ 1000
29 Jul 2025 20:55 - 29 Jul 2025 21:03What is the battery voltage when the motor is "off" ? I charged the battery yesterday. Today it is/was at 13.1 volts before doing tests.I have an electrical question.
I installed a SH 775 R/R. It's the proper one, with the stamp on the fin.
First I had the positive going into the OEM plug with the fuse. But I wasn't getting enough volts. So I hooked it up directly to the Battery. Positive and negative.
All the connections are solders. I hooked the stator wires ( Yellow, Blue, Red) to the R/R. Eliminating the old plugs, wires, and regulator, rectifier.
Testing all 3 combo's RY, RB, YB. I get 60 VAC @ 4000 rpm. But I can only get 12.62 VDC , at the battery at 4000 rpm.
Is this pointing toward a weak stator? From all the reading I've read on here. It's kinda pointing that way!?
Is the R/R you have "new" or "used" ? The r/r is used
With stator disconnected have you checked the resistance as per the FSM ? (RY,RB,YB should be between 0.56 - 0.84 ohms) With the ohms set on 200. All three read 1.5 ohms each.
Set at 2k they read .002 ohms
also check between each of the three leads and ground. I checked these and got no reading. So this should tell me there is no short! Correct?!
with everything connected put a voltmeter red lead to battery "positive" and black lead to "positive" coming out of the R/R (should be no more than 0.5v)
Connect voltmeter black lead to battery "neg" and red lead to ground wire coming out of R/R (should be no more than 0.3v) I'm not sure if I was doing this right. But I got the same voltage at the battery and at the connection coming out of the R/R, on all the different combos.
I couldn't see a stator spec in the manual but I believe anything above 50v AC on each leg is OK I checked it again and was getting 67 VAC on all 3 wire combos.
I checked the voltage at the battery after letting it idle for a few minutes to warm it up. 1500 RPM- 12.73V 2000 rpm - 12.80V 4000 rpm-12.92V
I also switched up to a 12 AWG pos. and neg. wire off the R/R to Batt.

I went with a 12 Gauge wire. On the Pos. and Neg. Automotive store didn't have any #10. Good point on the inline fuse, I plan to do the same.
