Greeting,

Summary.

Purchased an 82 KZ1000 K2 earlier this year. Ran ok, but was "filthy rich". I pulled the carbs and there were a bunch of things that were out of whack for a bike that had the stock exhaust and air-box. These include larger mains, different needles with a much more aggressive taper, and one of the carbs didn't even have a pilot jet installed (just sucking fuel through the hole). The float needles showed some signs of wear, so I decided kits should be beneficial.

I ordered these kits - z1parts.net/carb-kit-kawasaki-kz1000j/?src=prn

I cleaned and rebuilt the carbs with the kits, but have still been getting poor performance. Starts and idles perfectly, but under load, it stumbles beyond 5K rpms and as it warms the stumble starts earlier down to the 3.5K range when fully warm. Ultimately gets to the point where you can barely crack the throttle before you hit the stumble.

Performing the Fuel Service Level check per the manual, I get inconsistent results (sometimes high, sometimes low).

I also performed a plug check and #1 - good, #2 - lean, #3 really rich, #4 filthy rich.

I've been reading that some of the carb kits available out there are poor quality, but I also have no idea what parts the PO had in the carbs when I got it.

I put the mains, pilots, and needles back to stock, so it seems like the questionable quality of the float needles could be causing my inconsistent fuel levels. Can anyone recommend a place I can pick up a quality set of float needles for these carbs?

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Genuine mikuni parts have their logo on, it looks like a square with a circle in the centre of it. When it comes to carb parts it pays dividendes to stick to genuine parts. I assume you are in the US? In the UK allensperformance.co.uk is the place to go. There must be an equivalent in the US, if not allens will post out to you.
