well 5 hours this afternoon and its running great.... Checked the valve clearance and had #3 exhaust and #4 intake too tight for my liking... Swapped out 280 for a 275 on #3 and a 220 for a 215 on #4... Installed new plugs B8ES... Set the idle fuel screws to the highest idle and then an additional 1/16th out as Steve suggested... RE sync and really took my time to get them as close as I could... Then with the ability to turn idle down low proved to me the timing was off... reset for 1&4 and 2&3. Checked the advancer working as it should... Now I have concerns I might have the wrong advancer plate... The "F" mark on mine doesn't look like the one in the FSM... Took it out for a short ride and very happy low RPM is smooth but I feel it could still be a little better, and it has a crisp throttle response...Can anyone show me a picture of the correct advancer plate for my '78 1000 B2???... Might be a little rich, the plugs are black... But it did idle a long time while syncing the carb... Maybe I shout adjust the pilot needle???

Sounds like the fuel screws are too rich now.

Steve I fear Id loose the smooth idle... maybe I should turn in a 1/4 turn on each and see what happens?

Its at best idle now. The previous plugs were black also that why I bought new... After finding the float to high I assumed that's why the plugs were black... Now that I pretty sure everything is set correct with the exception of timing, I don't understand why the plugs are black again? will timing cause that? Like I mentioned I nave concern about the advancer plate being correct. can anyone tell me the correct advancer for my bike?

The spark advancer for that bike is different than a B1 or a B3, but not overly different. It operates between 10 deg BTDC and 40 deg BTDC. It should be at 1000 rpm at 10 deg and as it advances it should be at 2350 rpm at 40 deg. The B1 starts at 20 deg BTDC.

Have you checked your air intake to ensure it's clean and drawing air? A plugged air intake would cause a rich mixture.

What is your voltage at the coil primaries? This can cause carbon buildup on the plugs.

hardrock,
Partzilla claims '77 thru '80 1000 LTD use the same advancer. 21148-1003
How do you tell deg's of timing when all there is are timing marks.
Primary voltage? is that the positive wire on the coil? tested to ground? I should mention it has dyna ignition and accel yellow coils...

The B1 did not use that one. It used 21148-010.

You can try to measure the angle between the T mark and the F mark to confirm yours is correct for your bike.

Yes, the primary side is the voltage input to the coil. The secondary side is the voltage output to the sparkplugs.

you can spend all day trying to get the idle correct but you will need a colour tune plug its the only way to get the mixture correct in all four cylinders, the timing marks on the advancer are T=tdc F=firing mark at normal tick over speed then there are the 2 marks further around the advancer (beyond the 4 & the 3) that should show with your timing light when you reach full advance around 3k

Can’t seem to get the timing down to the “F” mark. Wants to stall out. By color tune plug are you talking the right color on the plug say doing a plug chop test or is that a tuning tool. Sorry not quite understanding your statement. had it out for a run this afternoon. It has a misfire while at a steady 3500 about 55 mph. Very random not consistent anyway it looks good. Still need to swap out the rear fender for the LTD style

With a colortune spark plug you can look into the combustion chamber of an running engine.

Thank you Scirocco

Here are the plugs after about an 80 mile ride this evening. Still has a random “fart” out of the #1 carb. #1 on the left 2,3,4 consecutively
