Good evening.

I'm working on the carbs for a 78 kz1000a2. When removing the pilot air screws while cleaning the carbs the o-rings were disintegrated. I want to replace them but does anyone have any tips? Seems when placing the oring on the screw I cannot get them to fit and start threading. Placing the orings in and trying to thread through will chew them up.

Sounds like the o-ring you have is too thick. Where did you get them? As for a source, Z1 Enterprise typically has such parts.

Edit: I just looked at the parts fishe for the KZ1000A2 and the diagram doesn't show air screws. Just the Pilot Screw by the float bowl that controls fuel.

Did you get the right replacment o-rings as a rebuild kit? If yes, put a Little grease on the o-rings, made things easier to fit.

Gotcha covered. OEM's will set you back about 10.00 a piece. I get mine from the o-ring store. They are of course the fractional size O-rings. Will have to find them. Will let You know tomorrow. Plus for other members that have this issue I will give the actual size which i'm sure many have found elusive.

Yes, there is only one screw that looks like it regulates a mixture of fuel and air through the pilot outlet according to the service manual. I am using o-rings part #16038-024. I tried some lubricant and when I attempt to screw them in the o-ring just starts popping off over the end of the screw. Was wondering if I'm missing something.

Maybe try some lube down into the tunnel where the screw fits.

OK here You go. The O-ring "I have found that works" with the correct friction fit is a 1.4x2.5mm. This works on the Kawasaki and Suzuki VM 26 and 28mm Mikuni carbs, maybe more. You can go to the store on package or i'll be happy to send You some. Let me know, Clay

Thanks might have to take you up on that. Going to mess around a bit over the weekend. Had to take a break after going through most of bike. Need to do fork seals, finish carbs and a few other routine maintenance tasks.

Before you attempt to fit again, make a roll out of steel wool. Take a hunk and roll it in the palms of your hands making a thick rope. The "rope" should be a friction fit down the bore of screw passage. Go just far enough to hit the threaded portion in casting. If You have compressed air, remove pilot jet and blow thru it's hole. This gets the particulates out of fuel screw hole. The steel wool just cleans the first few mm of smooth bore, before the threads begin, that the o-ring resides in. Use a flashlight and a magnifying glass if you have one and shine light thru venture and look thru hole where screw goes. Hole should be nice and round. If not clean again. And as Nessism stated put a very little dab of oil on o-ring and inside bore where screw goes. After all this is done don't put spring on screw yet! Thread screw slowly and feel for resistance. Repeat cleaning/blowing/oiling as necessary until screw bottoms, VERY GENTLY. Let me know if You need them, Clay

Don’t screw them in tight at the bottom or the tip could get stuck and break off in the hole.
