Additives to combat Ethanol
10 Feb 2012 20:41
I didn't want to hijack another tread with this question,
Do any of you guys use additives that help protect vulnerable parts from the crap they're putting in today's fuels ?
I'm putting my faith in Marvels which claims to help keep the carbs clean and lubed but it doesn't say any thing about rubber parts.
Am I better off just sticking with premium gas ?
JD

Thanks for the info. MFolks
I'm right on edge of the "up to 10 percent Ethanol" only section of Illinois.
North , South and West of me have a station here and there.
Nice country roads
Unfortunately the closest one is around 25 miles away .

I used to buy my gas at the local Exxon. Now I noticed they have 10% ethanol . Now I'm not sure where to get gas, this shit is everywhere!
Local engine builder was giving me the lowdown on what ethanol does to injectors and valves after sitting for a while. He reccomended the Blue marine type sta-bil.

Stuff is highly recommended by everyone i talk to. Originally developed for marine engines. Also acts as a gas preservative like stabil.

I found this hope it helps
AVOID unecessary use of Gas Additives & Fuel System Treatment Products that contain alcohol with E10 gas blends...
Products that contain strong solvents, emulsifiers and water-absorbing agents should also not be used with E10 gas type.
Following simple precautions is usually enough to safely manage E10 in most (newer) engines, when you replace gas every 2-3 weeks, and are certain gas purchased contains less than 10% ethanol alcohol.
More Tips:
- Avoid gas additives that are water soluble. Use caution if additive is not compatible with strong "oxidizing" agents.
- Avoid products that state they will push water at bottom of tank back into upper petroleum layer - You do NOT want to constantly be running your engine on water-diluted, lean fuel.
- Since E10 is a strong solvent, cleanser, de-greaser, anti-freeze and octane enhancer, regular use of additional gas additives is usually unnecessary - Only unique circumstances will determine the need for additive use, (E.G. prolonged gas storage, high humidity/moist environments, marine engines, older vehicles).
- Using alcohol-based and strong solvent additives as a preventive measure in fresh, good e10 gasoline is not recommended, since this will only increase water absorption and parts disintegration, and may also raise ethanol content over manufacturer recommended 10% maximum.
- Please do not misinterpret the purpose of the chart below. Many reputable gas treatment products contain alcohols and ethanol.
But ask yourself, why add more alcohol, for "prevention" for ethanol alcohol-caused gas problems? Simply makes no sense...
While several products in the market can help to combat specific negative effects of ethanol, no "miracle" product exists for all situations. Don't fall prey to deceptive advertising that often use misleading scare tactics....
Additives should only be used with ethanol-blends when other simple E10 precautions are not enough...
Examples: Ethanol gas causing drying out or disintegration of parts? Chose a lubricating fuel conditioner. Excessive water absorption in tank? After ruling out all possible causes, (E.G. Gas water-contaminated at time of purchase, dislodged hose or other repairable open entry in fuel system) - Choose a product that helps to delay phase separation or breaks down water molecules (stabilizer). Rusting of engine parts? Choose a corrosion inhibitor...
REVIEW LIST: Does your gas additive contain alcohol and/or water absorbing ingredients?
(For informational purposes only - There are many thousands of gas additive products; Products listed below are just examples).
