dirty float bowls

Ok,long story short.. rode my bike home from work last week, heads redone, carbs synched, runs great in the upper rpms, stubles and dies at idle, took the tank off to paint it and do a few changes to the bike overall..
Decided to get a clear glass and take a look at the gas in the float bowls, and found a good bit of crud.
trying to figure if I need to take the carbs off and go through them as I might have junk in the idle circuit, or just run some seafoam through it and see if it goes away... pretty newbish to bike carbs, but have rebuilt weber and dellortos before..
Thanks for any ideas, and if needed will go through the carbs starting this Sunday..( I work nights and weekends)

Btw, 1984 gpz 750; good compression, pretty limited budget, decent hand tools, no compresser til next week or two..

Take off the gas tank/petcock assembly and clean both. Check tank for rust. Install inline fuel filters. Drop float bowls and clean crud out of them.

I would take off the carb tops (where the air pistons are). Then you can use carb spray cleaner to clean the carbs out pretty well on the bike.

Many a bike and car fire has been caused by using glass bodied fuel filters! Go to www.z1enterprises.com and get some of their plastic fuel filters.

I've got a few plastic ones lying around from my volkswagens, think they'll be fine?

White Plastic, with the orange/ yellow paper inside? Probably fine, just check your flow out of the petcock sans filter, then with and make sure it doesn't restrict. Also with Plastic filters make sure it is clear of Hot Metal, like the head.

Seafoam shouldn't hurt any, but will it do anything? Best to remove and clean, carbs, tank, petcock, then install lines and filter.

Aere there any rubber diaphrams/ gaskets I have to worry about? I might just take them off, just don't wanna mess up the sync...

When you take the carb tops off, be careful. The vacuum pistons have ruber diaphragms attached. Carefully inspect for holes or slits.

Thanks for the info motor head, I have the diagram in my manual for my carbies, but will definitely go through that tutorial. It was suggested that I take the bowls and the tops off and blow through them with carb cleaner. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't going to ruin anything by doing so.. I would like to try all options before pulling these things

probably faster to just pull them, those bowl screws are Phillips head and can be pretty tight. You need pressure pushing on the screwdriver to get them from rounding out. also very hard to be sure of the small transition circuits being clean, as with them still against the motor you can't see them.
But without a compressor, it will be hard to really clean them. Spray carb cleaner in a can has quite a bit of pressure though.

Yeah, I have special made screwdrivers for removing bowl screws on the bike. If not, it's probably not doable on the bike or at least it would be a major pain.
