after adjustments to the idle screw and putting cardboard in front of the carbs i got it to start it idle really high and i could adjust it at that time but i noticed gas spit out all over the cardboard any ideas why that would happen?

That is the same thing i had. So 3 of your choke flaps came off and most likely went thru your motor. Typically this don't do too much damage but now you need to fill in the flaps somehow. I used a 2 part epoxy and it works great! The flap opening is now completely sealed so now i use the choke lever to adjust the choke position as it warms up.

Choke flaps came off and went through the motor??!!!?!?!

and it DOESN'T do much damage?? WHAT!?!?

How the $&#% does that happen????

It happens at very small throttle openings (like idle). Its no big deal.

Lots of explanation left out here... :P

Yeah, oddly, I think I have at least one motor where the flaps went through it. I don't know how the flaps make it through or if they melt or what.

Sometimes the flaps will get stuck in a valve and that will cause a low compression problem. There is at least one thread on KZR with pictures of that.

If a flap gets stuck in an intake valve, that may cause gas to shoot backward out of the carb.

If it's stuck in a valve, a compression test will show it.

Otherwise, you can take out the plugs and try to look in through the holes.

If you don't find it, don't be too worried as long as your compression is good.

Would diagnose as dysfunctional float valves and/or float accompanied by dysfunctional overflow circuit.

Good Fortune! :)

Oh boy... first, be VERY patient. These bikes are pretty old, and need some decent maintenece and TLC for thier entire lives. It will never stop. You will get to ride it soon, but you must do everything thoroughly, and correctly the first time.

Search: Carb Cleaning 101 just about anywhere... and begin.
It should only take a few hours - and remember while cleaning the carbs, spray through the pilot jet system, and make sure the spray blows through the passages into the carb bore, the same on all.

Best of luck
