hi i have an 83 kz550 ltd after a while of work it was ready to be ran it would not start up with out the throttle wide open and once started it would stay until you started to let the throttle go down. it will not idle or run at any low rpm. i have cleaned the carbs i know it needs new float bowl gaskets which i am getting tonight. Could that cause the problem i have? if its not does anybody have other ideas? maybe the carbs need synced i am unsure how to do that and dont relly understand technical terms. if you have any idea please help thanks

Welcome to KZR!

I would make sure you have good spark and compression on all 4 cylinders. When you cleaned the carbs did you completely disassemble? You may need to bench synch them to get them close. There are a lot of little passage ways in the carbs that must be clear, especially the pilot circuit which controls the lower RPM's. If you don't have one purchase a Factory manual off Ebay, its worth it!

Near the top of the screen is a tab labeled "KZ Information". Put your cursor over it and a small menu will appear.
Choose "Filebase"

Then choose "Non Model Specific"

There you will find several good articles on Mikuni, VM and slide carbs. There are articles on theory, general operation and specific tuning.

Grab some snacks, you may be there a while....

Is there an idle adjustment thumb screw on those carbs ? Is it possibly something as simple as resetting the idle adjust screw ?

You really need a service manual for your bike. If you don't have 1 I suggest going to member loudhvx threads and check his signature for a pdf file download. It will show a lot of info, with pictures and how to do the adjustments. When you had the carb's off and apart did you check the intake manifold for air leaks/ crack's? Sounds like if it is not a mechanical linkage problem, then you could have a vacuum leak. Are all the nipples at the manifolds either hooked up properly or plugged off? See why a manual is needed?

You really need a factory service manual! It explains how to bench sync using 4 pins of the same diameter under each slide and adjusting them from the top side. It is kind of hard to explain this in a thread, a manual wood be the best.

The carbs do have a idle adjusting screw, on the top in the center, can't miss it.

Just to make sure, did you clean 4 main jets AND 4 pilot jets?

Hope this helps,
Tom

What model do you actually have? The chain LTD, or shaft LTD? Their carbs are very different.

Here's a diagram for the chain LTD (Kz550C) carbs.
