Problems installing Andrews x3 camshafts
07 Oct 2025 02:40 - 07 Oct 2025 03:27I have a large 1385 cc engine and enlarged valves 40x34. I started installing 418 camshafts, but during a test fit, I found that the valve head hits the valve stem seal at maximum lift. Without the seal, everything is fine, the gap between the valve head and the guide is about 1.5 mm. Has anyone encountered such a problem? I'm writing through a translator, sorry.

Which valve guides do you have fitted ?
After market guides such as APE etc are shorter than stock OEM to prevent your issue.

An option. From memory, the OEM valve guide seals used on the 80's KLR650 have a shorter stance, sealing rubber not as tall.

The bushings are exactly bronze APEs, but they have the same height as the Kawasaki stock. The other day I took measurements, the protrusion of the sleeve ~ 14 mm. Maybe ape is making them smaller now, but I've been buying parts for quite some time.

Probably so, then the spring support plate must be changed. Because the oil cap sits on the sleeve to the support plate.

Spring seat has nothing to do with it.

If you install APE titanium retainers this issue may resolve itself.
I also had a similar issue when trying to use stock 650 steel retainers. The APE retainers are a different shape and the stepping is way different in the shim side and the spring side. This difference solves shim thickness issues and seal clearance issues.
I always thought they were just lightweight until I had a set in my hands to compare with stock parts.
From the web site : "APE titanium retainers are shorter than stock to provide additional retainer to valve guide clearance for high lift cams"

Yes, the margin between the cap and the spring support plate is quite large, more than 5 mm for sure. I agree. But this will not solve the problem..... If you just cut the guides and put the oil scraper caps on the glue.....

Translation...
I have titanium valve covers, but they're the same size and not APE. I can trim them, but the valve keepers will be below the cover. There are also aluminum covers, and they're much lower and the keepers don't stick out, but I'm afraid to put them on the 440 lift springs. Thanks, I'll see what APE has. The Kawasaki cover, my titanium cover, and the aluminum cover.

There are quite a few different manufactures making (or have made) titanium/aluminum retainers and they will vary on where the valve keepers sit or the total depth of the retainer design. A few sources use to be Manley, Kibble White, APE, Orient Express.
I wish I took a comparison pic between those and the stock 650 retainer, the sizing difference is dramatic. They are design so the valve tip sits very deep into the retainer and the spring guide on the bottom is very shallow.
I had to use some on my intake side when building the head for my 1200 engine.
