You cc the mold to measure the piston crown/dome displacement.

What do you fill the mold with? Is it plaster?

Modeling clay is typically sold at hobby stores and is readily available on ebay.  Not much is needed, and it's reusable...

The plastic wrap provides for clean and immediate part separation.
Also, the slick barrier protects the clay and prevents it from drying out.

I tried using plasticine, but even when heated, it didn't always form a clear piston shape. I did try making a thick "pancake" without a cap-like base. In any case, I'll have to try and compare the results of pouring the piston in the block and pouring the impression.
