KZ750 Engine code?
13 Feb 2019 08:02
Does anyone know what the engine code for a 1982 KZ750LTD is? I am looking at an engine for a 1983 KZ750 to potentially buy and use on my '82 750LTD but I'm not sure it will fit. The code of the engine I am looking at is KM284-2.
How do I know which KZ this went into and if it will fit?

Are you in the USA? There should be an engine number on the RH side of the crankcase near the oil filler cap.
Look at your bike to see what it has. The 750-4 chain drive engine number begins with KZ750EE followed by 6 digits >> KZ750EE012345
Cyclechaos.com lists many KZ models and has the frame & engine number ranges for the various models & years.
Chain drive models: KZ750E/H/L/R. ZX750A. I'm not certain how interchangeable they are, though.
Note: the later ZR750 air cooled engine numbers are also KZ750EEXXXXXX, so I kinda wonder if a Zephyr or ZR7 engine could be used.
Edit: but after doing some photo comparisons, the engine mounting appears to be different.

Are you looking at this engine online or have you actually seen it or have a photograph?
Is it a 4 cylinder engine ?
Kawasaki also made 750 twins from about 77 to 83. There is a n 82 M1 twin and an 83 K1 LTD which is also twin cylinder and might explain the "KM" in the number you mentioned.
Just a thought as the number KM284-2 does not look like a 750-4 number

Ya know, the Zephyr engine swap is intriguing, but I think it could be a bit too much. I called a couple of dealerships and they didn't have anything insightful to tell me. There is an engine available I could buy, but I don't want to get too in over my head.

Did you locate your engine number?
edit: for a direct swap the ZR7 is probably a no-go. I did some photo comparisons on EB & the ZR7s appear to have different engine mounts >> at least the front/bottom mounts. the top mount looks the same. I guess Kawasaki used the KZ750EE engine number on the ZR750s because those engines are basically the same, although not identical or interchangeable with a KZ frame.

You need an engine with solid engine mounts and mechanical tach drive. The later engines went to rubber engine mounts, so the crankcase tabs are different from those on your bike, and an electronic tach. If you find those two things the engine should fit up fine.

I ordered a 1983 KZ750EE engine with about 8k miles! It came from a running bike so I'm hoping it works out! *fingers crossed*
