Its not powder coat (only the engine covers are powder coated), the cases, barrels and head have a high tech heat dispersing ceramic coating, good for at least 900 deg C. Link here..

Also the photo of the raised liner was taken before, not after. It looks fine now, but you can feel a very slight 'burr' on the liner edge now, maybe due to corrosion of the surrounding alloy. Could get it ground flat as I said, but one heat cycled in a running engine, the liner could drop slightly.. or so I'm told.
Meanwhile I must be a glutton for punishment.. just started a new Zed project..

The Z1000A1 project is dead, as the frame came from the US, and to get the bike road legal in the UK meant I'd first have to build it as a standard bike, which I didn't want to do. The Z650/1170 is running now but not happy with the outrigger system, so that's going to be re engineered at some point. The work done on the Z1000A1 project to fit Z900RS running gear and XJR1300 swingarm hasn't been wasted, I intend to use those parts on the new project instead.

Fitted the pistons, now need to fit the block without breaking any rings... I've been putting it off lol.
The hangers for the rearsets have been hard anodised, and are now back on the bike. Not sure if I should've had the leavers anodised as well?

Now things get a bit confusing. Back in January I bought another Z650 frame, with V5, for a price I couldn't say no to. Since then I've been working on it here and there. I still had the front end and wheels from a Z900RS along with a ZJR1300 swingarm, which had all been modified to fit a Z1000A1.. that project now being dead.
Although the Z650 frame is a bit wider than the Z650, everything could be made to fit, fairly easily. I just need to sort out the lock stops on the frame and then it can go off to be powder coated..
New mounts were welded on the frame and a pair of rearsets made, mainly from left over parts I already had.
It wasn't long before a mate told me that a near neighbour of his had a Z650 engine he wanted to sell, for a very good price. The head and block had been rebuilt/honed, and hadn't been refitted yet.
Unfortunately, the elderly owner didn't have the shed space to keep the bottom end indoors, and so it had been sheeted up and left outside for many months. Condensation had done its worse, but I hope the internals are ok, as they would've had a coating of oil.
Having done the deal, a week later the owner told me he now wanted to sell his project bike and all spares (there is a literal shed load of parts). He had been building a cafe Z650, but the engine was together in the frame, it had rebuilt wheels with new SS spokes, new tyres etc

I made a simple alloy bracket for the ZX6R rear light, then cut up the headlight mount from a Z900RS to give me a headlight mount. I did consider buying the matching headlight.. until I saw the price.. even used ones are £400 to £500. Think I'll be using a standard Z650 (black) headlight. It'll need a couple of small spacers to fit, but that's not a problem.
