The shim that broke was on the other side of the engine. No jb weld got anywhere except on the piece I fixed. I can take a pic of the piece I did today and upload it. Along with the head.

Ouch, sorry to see that. The later GPz went to shim under bucket style to prevent spitting shims when being thrashed.

Maybe someone will chip in here and tell you if you can modify that head for the later type, I would if you can.

You can change to shim under and valve retainers.

Is this more reliable? What all should I have to buy to convert it? I still have the problem with those two being seized. Liquid wrench soak them?

I have owned a few (still do) and worked on these engines for nearly 40 years... I have NEVER spit a shim nor have I seen a fractured one like this.
What, other then the cam lifting off the shim, massive floating valves or no oil... could cause this?

So I jb'd the number 3 positioned cam cap thing on the intake side near intake lobe for cylinder 1 and 2. The valve seats/cap things that seized are intake valve for cylinder 4 and exhaust valve for cylinder 1. I wont be able to take pictures today because I ran out of time. Im wondering, can I just swap the head out for a different head? Like the gpz, I havnt had the time to look up head compatibilities.

It could have been cause by low oil in the valve area honestly. I had been checking clearances and working on the pieces. I think it may have dried up a little or lost oil, I was also installing the end plugs so I cleaned up most of the oil. So frustrated.

Why would they be frozen? did you run it out of oil? Take out the cams, then use a wood dowel to tap on it until it frees up. I've heard of using 650 cam followers, HD springs and valve retainers for more aggressive cams. If you are going that way, you need help.

When I took the head off, and turned the head upside down all but two off the caps slid out. I tried using a tapping them loose. No luck. It was probably low oil. I thought there was enough up there. Guess I was wrong. I think im going to try liquid wrench, and keep tapping away. I also think Ill be taking all the valves and springs out and replacing them with better ones. I mean the bike has 44k miles on it, so im sure it couldn't hurt.

The service manual says to lightly coat all this stuff in moly grease during reassembly. I guess this is why. The manual also says to keep track of all the buckets because they wear unevenly. Is it possible you got them mixed up? That could account for some being too tight in the bore.

Also, maybe the cam timing was off when you reassembled and your valves collided, causing the buckets to get stuck and the shims break. In this case some of the valves are probably bent.
