sup guys im building a custom chopper using a kz900 and a dyna III ignition... well i got it all wired up like how Dyna suggests.. and when i turn the ignition there is no spark... but when i turn the ignition off there is a spark..while having the spark plug out and grounded to a bolt. i made my own harness and wired the ignition just how it should be and it seems like the coils are getting power when they are not supposed to

When you turn the ignition on, there should be no spark, and when you turn it off, it should spark.

Think of points systems, when does the coil fire? When the points open and stop current to the coil. When you turn the key on, the coils get power, when you turn it off, the coils magnetic field collapses, which generates current in the secondary side of the coil, which discharges by jumping the gap at the plug.

what i ment by turning ignition on was acutually turning motor over.... so it is supposed to spark when you turn it the ingnition off? wounder why im not getting spark since the coils are gettin voltage..i

Maybe the Dyna is not working right, I don't know as I know next to nothing about Dyna ignitions.

Are you sure you have the rotor aligned properly?

The Dyna works by completing the coil circuits all the time until the rotor's magnet comes near the Hall-effect pickup. That's when it shuts off the coil-current by lifting the grond connection. A spark happens as a result, as Steell said.

well i took the dyna out and desided to through the points back in it... does anyone know how the IC Igniter wires up? its for a 74 kz900 and in the wiring diagram on here it shows that the wires off the points plate (two wires green, and black) wire straight to the coils... and then there is a power wire...jumping the two. how does the ic igniter wire up or does this bike not use one?

The stock KZ900 was a points system and had no igniter, the points triggered the coils directly.
