I'll just put this here because the 81 750 and 81 650 are supposed to be the same, but I can start another thread if mods prefer.
I just picked up an 81 650H and didn't notice the start button is missing (because there was also no key, so no attempt to start!). Is there an EASY way to just activate the start switch for testing and test ride purposes (if I ever get it road worthy), without having to go to the trouble of rewiring and soldering new buttons or switches? There are much more important issues that need to be ironed out before I spend time and money and worry on that sort of thing.

Do you want this temp alternative to run through the clutch switch (recommended) ?I'll just put this here because the 81 750 and 81 650 are supposed to be the same, but I can start another thread if mods prefer.

I am largely electrically incompetent, so what I was really hoping for is just a way to activate the starter circuit where the button is. The spring is still there. For example if I could just stick something in there to make that momentary connection to activate the starter, that would be easiest for me. Wiring up a separate switch of some kind would be less desirable, but if that's the only way then it might be just as easy/difficult to replace the switch. I guess I'd like to avoid messing with wiring if possible, since I don't know if or when this bike will ever start or roll.

Yes you can do that if the spring is still there.
I used a hinge pin with a bit of rubber tube for a handle and to prevent shock or short but basically any metal rod with the right diameter. Eg a bolt with a bit of tape.

Ah, thank you! I was just this minute searching for your older post on that because I knew I saw it somewhere, and my search brought me right here lol.
So what is completing the circuit? I see the metal in the bottom of the button hole, but I don't understand what is the other physical end of the circuit.

If I remember correctly the other end of the circuit is the spring itself
