Looking For Guidance On Helping Me Off The Ledge

Your starter safety switch is on the clutch lever. 2 black wires.
You can bypass the switch by disconnecting the switch. Then connecting the two wires that go to the starter solenoid together. Tape that connection as it will be +12v when you press the starter button.

I need a third hand to do the readings and my kid won't be home from school until later today. But I did get the clutch lever switch removed and the two wires into one.

Is that wiring harness a 81 gpz 550 D1??
I do not see a yellow with red stripe wire going to the starter solenoid.
The yellow/red wire is +12v going to the low beam for the headlight.

The two wires going to the starter solenoid should be a solid black wire (like the wires for the safety switch). The next wire will be a black wire with a yellow stripe.

The colors on the solenoid itself are different, but that doesn't bother me. It's the wire colors on the harness that are suspect.


also disconnect the wires going to the solenoid(red circle)
meter set to resisance
measure the yellow/red wire and the black wire coming from the starter solenoid.
what is the reading?

The US spec KZ750H2 uses yellow/red for the starter solonoid ground and solid black for the feed so I guess it depends on the model, market and year the loom came from

"Go figure" in 45 years of working with automotive electrical systems I have never seen a "direct ground connection" anything other than the recognised ground colour for that brand. You do have to ask "WHY"  !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The 1981 gpz550 has black/yellow for ground.
The 1982 gpz550 has yellow/red for ground.

I just looked at a couple of 550 diagrams in the file base A1 and A2, both are the same as the 750 example I posted  !!

SOLVED

The eBay start button cluster I purchased "NEW" did not have this yellow lead coming off of it. With the known good cluster installed it turns over strong.

I wonder if the seller was basing it on "first registration" year or "model year" (as we know model year changes in July) so an August 81 bike would be an 82 model year
