Car Jump start gone wrong
08 Jul 2019 18:15
SO I ran my 1979 KZ650 sr outta battery. I then proceeded to try and jump it with a friends car. I've done this before to a motorcycle an im sure the polarity wasn't reversed. A smaller red wire started to smoke and bubble! I believe that this goes to the rectifier. WHat happened? Is it possible that I have fried a bunch of stuff?
Thank you so much for any and all help

Yes, possible. Particularly if the car engine was running.

Good grief! Why would you do that? Now you will still need to buy a battery, but now you will need to test every component of the electrical / charging systems and replace any damaged bits along with the wiring. Ed

When first starting my 650, I removed the old battery & connected jumper cables to a good fully charged car battery with the car battery removed from the vehicle The motorcycle started & ran fine. My thinking at the time was that a 12V car battery is basically the same as a motorcycle battery except it's bigger & I removed it from the vehicle as a just in case to avoid any boo boos.

Oooops! I guess he didn't see your warning about using a car to jumpstart his bike. Martin has the right idea, it's just a 12 volt battery, only larger.. especially If you eliminate the car's electrical system.
A bad rectifier might have been the initial cause for the dead battery in the first place. Who knows. ??

So I Went and got a new battery for tomorrow. going to replace that wire and give a look at the other wires to see if they are damaged. Then i am going to check the rectifier
What Is the pourpose of a rectifier regulator?
Can the bike run without it? it is part of the charging system?

The bike cannot run without those two. On older bikes, the regulator and the rectifier are separate units. On newer bikes they are combined into a single unit. Simply, as I understand them, the rectifier converts the alternating current produced by the charging system into direct current. The regulator regulates how much of that current gets into the electrical system based on the system's need at any given moment.

I'd disconnect the rectifier and regulator to see if it runs. Hopefully you didn't burn out the coils and igniter if the bike has one. If it will run plug in the rectifier and be prepared to disconnect quickly it if the wires get hot. If it still runs plug in the regulator and test the voltage to the battery. Combo R/R's are cheap used and easy to install if you need one.

been trying to locate a manual online for the kz650d2 but i cannot find one. Anyone know resistance levels for the recitfier and regulator. they are separate on this bike.

Thanks guys!So I replaced all the damaged wires and got a new battery. At first I was really worried cause i had no power, spark or anything.
But i unplugged the rectifier and hotwired it.
It started right up!! Everything worked!
I'm guessing this means I have to buy a new regulator/rectifier?
It is one on my bike.
I have a 1979 kz650sr or the d2 version from what I've been researching,

What is the reason you do not want to jumpstart a kz from a car?
