Gonna need more info than that.

What year engine?
What igniter? Do you have a picture?
What pickups do you have?
What resistance coils do you have?

The shifter is on the left side of the motor, like 99% of all Jap bikes from that era.

You have the engine, but what about everything else? You say you want to run it "outside of the bike" - are you trying to make the engine run without it being mounted in a frame? Ed

Using the motor for a custom go-kart. I bought it off a friend who had it as a backup motor.
No idea what year it is
Also How much is a kz650 motor worth?

Some Kz coils are marked with a + and -, but it shouldn't matter which is which, so there is not really a reason to have them marked. On single output coils there may be a small benefit to having the polarity a certain way at the plug, but that does not apply on waste-spark systems. Just for uniformity, I put the red wire to the + terminal.

The motor looks to be a later motor since it has the valve cover ports, which you should cap off. They are not vents, they are emissions related. The little rubber pipe coming off the transmission is the crankcase vent, which should be left open, with a hose or filter.

The valve cover seems to have a bulge for an idler pulley on the camchain, so it is a roller-camchain motor. So maybe it's somewhere from 1979 to 1982. The vin number can be used to get it more precise.

The coils (primary) should measure somewhere between 2.3 and 2.7 ohms. Points coils would measure around 4 ohms. Those coils in the photos look like the later electronic ignition coils.

That igniter looks to be one from the first year of igniters.

That bulge in the center of the cover holds a rubber chain guide. All '80 and later KZ 650 used the hyvo cam chain. No kickstarter is the other clue.

Since it doesn't have a kick starter, it's probably from an 81 or 82 KZ650-CSR. The shift pedal shaft is directly below the sprocket in the 4th pic --- it has a splined end. There is also a clutch pushrod & shift rod nearby. Do not pull out the shift rod, as it holds the shift forks which will fall down & they are difficult to re-install. Parts diagrams. Partzilla. 1981 KZ650-H1.

Voltage regulator. If you need a reg-rec, you can use one from a late model Ninja 500 or Vulcan 500 (credit to loudhvx).
good condition units can be found on eebbaayy for pretty cheap. or you could use a mosfet reg-rec.

Ignition coils n stuff. you can use Dyna ignition coils. either the grey 2.2 ohm (closest match to stock) or the green 3.0 ohm which are also used with the Dyna S ignition system. Related, be sure to clean, check & lubricate the timing advancer under the pulsing coil plate. When turning the crankshaft, use a 17mm wrench on the big nut (not the smaller/inner 14mm advancer bolt).

Kawasaki service manual. jarlef z650 . the 1981 KZ650 pdf manual is in the Files section. w color wiring diagram.

Thanks... never noticed the bulge on the later covers.
Doesn't the roller chain cover have the same bulge? I thought I remember seeing it on the early 650's.
The 550 hyvo covers don't have that bulge.
Maybe Kaw just didn't bother changing the casting.
