On the right side of the engine(as you sit on the seat) under a CD shaped cover should be the mechanical advancer they mention. A bolt secures the advancer to the crankshaft.
It advances/retards the ignition using weights and springs by rpm. I'd clean and lubricate this as it probably hasn't been serviced in a while.

Dyna S Ignition System is a complete self-contained electronic ignition system built with the latest state-of-the-art engineering. This is the same ignition used by top racers over the past 2 decades. The Dyna S is completely housed behind the ignition cover and uses a magnetic rotor with the original spark advancer, so the factory advance curve is maintained.
The venerable Dyna S ignition System is a time proven solution to the basic ignition needs of the vintage muscle bike. As a stand alone ignition the Dyna S is the standard of performance and reliability.

Here is what is throin me off "The Dyna S electronic ingition system wasdesigned as a points replacement, but can be used an many late model motorcycles with the addition of a mechanical advancer" from the instructions for the Dyna S. Does this apply to my bike with the factory electronic ignition?
Thanks

it is only worth doing it if you buy the whole kit for ppl with the j motor as it didn't have points.
the Dyna2000 computer module would be the only reason for a change.
It gives u dif advance maps, and a rev limiter.
U already had pointless electronic signal, so there may be no gain there.
all u may gain is new parts over old.
if you get the module you need magnetic rotor,
hence the whole kit purchase.

Could well be wrong, but seem to recall reading that somewhere along the line Kawasaki igniter assumed the mechanical advancer duties.
Yet Z1E does indeed list the Dyna-S for 1982 KZ1000LTD, but with pics of the spring-weight style advancer.
If Tom is correctly interpreting the Dyna-S instructions, am wondering if Dyna is saying the spring-weight style advancer unit from an earlier model is needed to bolt right into the 1982 KZ1000LTD.
Would suggest confirming model application with Z1E prior to ordering, and further info regarding whatever different advancer may be required, and any other ignition parts swapping necessary.
Here's the ignition diagram from kawasaki.com, and the parts list which doesn't exactly refer to an advancer as described on parts diagrams for earlier models with the spring-weight style.
Which part on the diagram, if any, is the mechanical advancer?

could be wrong but i think the mech. adv. on the 82 will work fine..people buy the dyna s to get rid of the ignitor..as this is sometimes a weak point in the ignition..
