Convert points to electronic on KZ750-4
26 Sep 2007 11:11
I recently purchased a 1980 KZ750E and the bike had points, I had thought that the bike should have had electronic for 1980.
I have now purchased the pick-up, coils, ignitor and complete wiring harness just to make sure I have it all. The cost was $44 USD for all the items.
Question is, this should just be a direct bolt on, right??
The bike is a race bike so I'll be cut out alot of the un-needed wiring for the lighting anyways.
Will I need to chance the wiring harness as well ?
Thanks in advance
FD

You need the advancer for the electronic setup. Or at least you will need the cam for the electronic; it's shaped different than the points cam.
As long as what you bought was for a 550/650/750 it should bolt right in. Electronic pickup plates for the bigger fours are bigger and need to be cut up a bit to fit.
You probably can use the original harness. By studying how an electronic system was wired versus the points on my bike, I used the same old harness and just moved a few wires to different connections on the igniter, grounded the igniter and aupplied power to it. I had to lengthen a few wires due to having the igniter under the battery box, but if an electrical 'tard like me can do it, anyone can.

Probably a dumb question but are you sure you got a 750 ????
I'd bet money all 750 /4s had electronic ignition.
Otherwise...like OKC_Kent said

i thought all the 750's had electronic also. i would just make a new wiring harness, it is not that complicated to make, and you could put a relay on at the same time to power the coils and the ignitor together. and yes if you got you stuff from a small 4 you are ok. i think the advancer and ignitor were different on some of the gpz that have electronic advance

Serial# states KZ750 and cast in the cylinder as well.
I did receive a advancer with the pick up.
All the parts came from a KZ650, the guy I bought them from said it should fit but I wanted to double check with guys prior to starting.
Not sure why the points were in it, maybe issues with prior system.
The bike runs good with the points but I would prefer running the electonic when I'm running the snot out of her on the race track.
Thanks

Not sure about 750's but should be the same as 650's. Electronic ign was not started until '81 on the 650's.

ALL 750-4 bikes had the electronic system, not points. Somebody switched something on your bike.

The link in my signature explaines how I swapped a kz1000 electronic Ign into my 650. The mounting plate was bigger on the 1000's, so you don't have to deal with the size issue.

My 750-4 manual shows all with electronic ignition, even the 1980 models.

Also, make sure the tip of the advancer rotor is pointing the right way. It should point to the "Tec" logo side.

If the pickup plate was apart, sometimes people put the magnets in wrong. I'll post a series of photos for the correct orientation.
