are vm26's alot better than vm28's as far as mpg?
normal riding, with little to no hotrodding..i was thinking of putting vm26's on my 1000 to see if my gas mileage went up..thanks for the input. i get around 35
mpg now..i thought it should be higher. plugs look normal with no black smoke and no overflowing of the carbs.

No idea on the carb question, but wouldn't it be cheaper to put a larger countershaft sprocket and/or a smaller rear sprocket on?

The size difference won't make much difference in mileage. 35 MPG is about right... a little low but not unusual. I suggest you look at different sprockets to lower engine speed at any given MPH...

id try a good stiff tuneup if you havent done one recently that should help your gas mileage.as long as you arent laying into the gas i dont think the carbs will make much differance myself;)
