This is a question that has been brought up quite a few times in the past, with experiences ranging from great to horrible.
I rebuilt the petcock on my '78 KZ650 and it didn't work worth crap, it continued leaking into the carbs.
I rebuilt a similar petcock on my '84 ZN700, and that one only leaked ever so slightly.
I'm pretty certain the reason the rebuild kit worked better on my ZN than on my KZ is because the ZN petcock was newer, and had been used for a shorter amount of time.
I think the kits RonKZ650 is talking about for around $10 are for the earlier
non-vacuum operated KZ petcocks, which only had o-rings in them.
The kits for the vacuum operated petcocks include the o-rings as well as the diaphram assy (
KAWASAKI KZ650 KZ750 KZ1000 KZ1100 ZN1100 PETCOCK KIT
), and tend to be a bit steeper in price.
Best thing I can suggest, would be to take apart the petcock for your bike and examine it for any excessive wear
before kicking down the cash for the rebuild kit.
FWIW, several diff versions (the fuel spigot faces in diff directions) of the vacuum styled petcocks can be bought through Kawi, and are around $80~$100.
