Will KZ1000 carb holders work on a KZ400. They look very similar. The bolt spacing is 58mm on the 1000, and about 61mm on the 400. The holder bores are 34mm on the 1000 and 32 on the 400.

The only problem is that on the 400, the bolt holes are not directly opposite each other. In other words, the line between bolt-hole centers does not go through the center of the bore. It's offset by about 3mm. Are the 1000's bolt holes offcenter as well?

I have some J model carb holders, and I'm pretty sure the bolt pattern is identical to the older 1000's, so I'll go check.

Ok, I just measured the J model carb holders with my digital caliper (in mm :) ), and according to my measurements there is a .5mm offset. Since they look to be a little offset to the naked eye, I think .5mm is reasonably accurate.

Thanks Steell!

I guess it means it won't line up too well. I'm getting tired of making carb manifolds for KZ400s, but I guess it's back to the hacksaw.

If you have an electric drill you could use a rotary file and elongate the holes inward and downward till they line up, and then enlarge the port to match the manifold.

Yeah, either way it's a bunch of the "w" word, that I'm allergic to. ;)

I bought some universal ones from pro-flo.com

part number: VM34-200-1
link:

and used a hacksaw to remove a portion of the mount. Then used an oversized washer that I modified with a grinder to make look like a half-moon, but without grinding into the center. Works great, and they are cheap too-15 bucks. Plus, the mount is aluminum so it is easy to cut.

Awesome ! I tried to put everything back together this afternoon only to discover the holders the local dealer sold me are the wrong size. Grr.

The old ones are 38mm ID on the carb end. The new are 41mm (Kaw #16065-037) but the same bolt pattern. Is there one off another model that also used the Keihin CV34s that I can use, or should I just get the universal ? If the "carb spigot diameter" of 40mm is what I think it is, that's not going to work either.

Thanks !

Turns out the correct holders (16065-048) are discontinued. The 79-up KZ400s used the same carbs , but have a different holder (16065-1002) listed. Anyone know if that can be made to substitute ? The universal ones indeed should sadly not work.

Thanks!

The answer is the 78 & up ones can easily be made to work, and are half the price to boot.

The only issue is that the '78 ones have the mounting holes on the centerline and the earlier ones are offset by 1/8". Drill the hole bigger and it fits fine. Actually, it will bolt up without modification, but the intake on the head will be mismatched with the holder.

Cool! Thanks Monk and Nyvtr. Those universal ones are interesting, but why does that one have a range of measurements for the bolt-hole-centers dimension while the other manifolds all have single dimensions?
