Air filter seems too tall?

Finally got my air filter in the mail. Been a journey for sure. Super excited to finally hopefully ride this thing, and of course another problem shows up 

It seems like the overall filter is too tall? Is this some weird 1983 model only thing? It is properly seated in the lower round assembly and it is about an inch or so too tall, I've attached some pictures. Please help!

 

Im not fully sure whats going on but the air filter holder may be sitting too high for some reason. It looks like there may be 3 bolts holding it on the air filter assembly. If at all possible, you could try to remove it and put it back in without taking the dreaded airbox out. Maybe you could take a picture of the innards of the airbox and one of the airbox cap.

God that is gonna suck  I should be able to get the bottom portion out though...maybe hopefully

Have you tried turning the filter over and seeing if it fits better that way?

If that filter is in the right way, I think you got the wrong part.  Before I'd go trying to remove anything from up under that airbox, I'd get on here , change the model to your bike, find the part #, then do a google search and cross-reference the factory part # with the one you have, to ensure whether it's correct or not.  I can't see any way that one will fit, even if there was something not assembled correctly in the bottom of your airbox.

Kawasaki shows at least two different part numbers for those models.
