Need help with needle jet insertion

Disassembled my Keihin cv34's for a complete drip and compressed air cleaning. That part is done. Now with reassembly I am not feeling good about re-inserting the needle jets into the carb bodies.
Seems they want to go in sideways. When I think i have them straight I go to tap them in with a flat punch it takes more effort than I think it should. Am I just too scared to whack it or am I missing something

Sounds like they are misaligned during insertion.

Any suggestions on how to get them in straight?

Drop the needle jet into the carb passage.  Use a tool, like a drift punch, to support it while you turn the carb right side up.  Look down the carb from the top, slide removed of course, and guide the needle jet up, so it properly aligns with the hole in the carb body.  Lightly tap the jet, making sure it doesn't cock and tilt, and push it into place.

Maybe my age is catching up with me??? I've tried your method and it helps a good bit with alignment!!
Now is the "push it in" part. I push. I tap. I HIT IT! It doesn't seem to want to go in, I can hit it harder but I don't want to.
Maybe the jet is upside down? I don't think so. The roundish end  is headed into the venturi,
Am I just OLD???

You have it upside down.  Round end facing float bowl.
