KZ700 a bit stumped
11 Apr 2026 13:58
Ok… no sure where to go with this. It’s got symptoms that seem to span several categories.
compression: 125-130 across all 4 cylinders. This is slightly better than last check last year.
carbs have been synced
replaced intake boots (carb to intake)
replaced rubber bellows on choke plungers.
Pilots all clear
weird symptoms:
at idle:
remove cap from 1: little to no change
from 2: stutters hard
from 3: stutters hard
from 4: slight stutter
plug 1: golden marshmallow
plug 2: a little darker than one, oil on threads
plug 3: black, oil on threads
plug 4: same as 2, but no oil
no “smoke” observed in exhaust, regardless of throttle or load. Looking in cylinders, I find no indication of oil actually in the cylinders. Just on the threads.
idles pretty smooth, but something does sound off. Though it definitely does NOT sound like it’s missing 2 cylinders. Removing caps from 2 or 3 are the only ones that seem to significantly change the idle. 1 or 4 sound very slight, if any change at all. I would find it impossible that it’s detonation on 1 and 4. I am baffled because all the symptoms and observations conflict with each other.
final observation: under load, it’s gutless and obviously missing on at least 1 cylinder above about 4500 rpm. This make me lean towards an issue(s) with main jets/needles/slides.
(Stock airbox with freshly oiled filter)
what am I missing here?!

Were the carbs bench or vacuum sync’d?

Ok. Disregard this post. Unless troubleshooting same symptoms…
the container with air filter oil in it… did not have air filter oil in it.
I washed the filter out. Got new oil. Runs great now!
*intense facepalm noises*
