Fuel filter
15 Dec 2025 12:00
Question, could the size of the fuel filter restrict the amount of fuel that flows to the carbs. I'm using one of these and its the same diameter of the pipe, with an 8mm outside diameter of the push on connection, which means the internal diameter is probably about 6mm. What are your thoughts on this.

A 6mm (~1/4") ID line is totally OK for a stock engine even at 1000cc. The internal holes in the carb bodies and the needle valve seat are smaller than that so those are the real restriction points.
On a modified engine or something over 1100cc I would opt for 5/16" ID lines.
Personally I would not use a plastic fuel filter as they are more prone to breaking/cracking, and its not cool to have a gas leak over a hot engine.
I would opt for a aluminum body filter with a sintered brass filter element. I have been using Emgo brand in both 1/4 and 5/16" for over 25 years with zero issues.

My thought is to never use a fuel filter to band-aid a crappy, rusted tank.

is that a motorcycle specific filter? some automotive units don't flow enough fuel for gravity fed and are intended for use w a fuel pump. I don't use a filter. the petcock has a filter screen and my tank is good.

Over the years I have seen fuel from gas stations with all kinds of "surprises" so I run a filter on my street bikes.
On my drag bikes I am usually filling up from a aftermarket container not a pump nozzle, and use a screen/funnel just in case. No filter on the gas drag bike but there is one on the fuel injected engine.

Yeah, its for a motorcycle, only resson i run a filter is because you just dont know what can get into the tank. I have no rust in it, so im not concerned about that peoblem. Its just that its a small filter and was wondering if enough fuel was passing through.
