It's all because of the Coasting enricher/Air-Cut. In Honda world, because they have been using them for years, Air-Cut is more of a correct terminology because that's what they do/cut air. You'll note the location in photos their location. One at the intake, one underneath the diaphragm. You have TWO separate functions of that Air-Cut diaphragm, vacuum and metering. Vacuum pulls the little diaphragm out to "Cut-Off/Block" the air rushing in from jet underneath the slide diaphragm, resulting in a richer mixture in pilot system. High Vacuum when engine high in RPMs and throttle plate in a closed position provides this. In normal state of running you're siphoning air from Both air jets. When coming down from a stop that protrusion from air cut blocks off the upper air jet. Anyhoot, something to consider, Clay
I've seen various BS34 sets with those extra ports on the inlet side, but without the air-cut system.  Haven't studied it close, but just wondering?

I have always thought the extra ports on the intake bell are vents for the bowls. Notice there are not hoses between the carbs to connect the vents as there are on the second pic (without the additional ports) you posted. Each carb has its own vent so no need to connect it to another carb.

I did some digging and noticed that the kz1000 that dont have those ports are from the later police from P5 and up. Just something to consider. I wonder what changed to make that happen...

Those make me salivate 🤤... maybe I'll find a good deal on some in the future. Meanwhile I have been researching and I found that the kz1000J3 model has basically the same carburetor with the same pilot air jets, main air jets, and starter jets. However the main jet, jet needle, and needle jet are pretty weird... curious on what you guys think.

This BS34 set was removed and placed in a box ten years ago

...trial fit for potential use early this year

They were then placed back in the box...

😆

Velocity stacks DO NOT work with a stock air box.

Lol...it only took me fifteen years to realize there were/are potentially great performance oriented options available for these old bikes.

That was ten years ago...

Yeah I heard that they are made lean from the factory. Is that true? What carbs are you running right now?

I believe so, sadly.

Thankfully, we have options available to satisfy the instinctual desire for speed and power, that some folks happen to be born with...

These carbs are all I should ever want, except a set of cheap TMR34's properly spaced for my head.

I did, a long time ago.
Wasn't worth the investment at the time, but maybe next year, if I can get it back up again.
