Kawasaki Z1R D3 Stock Airbox Question

I’m not allowed to turn wrenches on my new D3 pile, but I am allowed to horde parts. I’m new to the platform, but what is the correct airbox for an 80 Z1R D3? I see two part numbers on the fiche for the airbox silencer (39161-1001 and 11016-009), based on some eBay listings there is one with two bungs on the left side of the silencer intake and one without. Anyone know which one is correct?

Could be one of those market-specific oddities. That is, maybe D3s sold in California had the hose barbs, while D3s sold in the UK did not. Local regulations often result in slightly different parts on the same model, depending on where they were originally sold.

I can't answer your question with any certainty, but I can take a guess.  I can say that the part number 11016-009 is correct for the 1978 (I have a vintage parts microfiche).

The Partzilla diagrams show 11016-009 for both 1978 and 1980 Z1R.  However, the Kawasaki.com diagrams show 39161-1001 for the 1980 Z1R.  I'm guessing the 1980 Z1R used the 39161 part, since the 1980 KZ1000A diagrams also show the 39161 part.  I can't imagine why the two 1980 KZ1000 models would use a different part.

As for which one has the extra tubes on the side, here is where I start really guessing.  I'm 90% sure that the 1978 model did not have those two extra tubes on the side.  The airbox was redesigned in 1979 to add a port for the clean air system.  It would not be surprising that Kawasaki also modified the silencer to have those two extra tubes.  If that's the case, the silencer for with the extra tubes would likely be correct for any 1979 or 1980 KZ1000.  Well, at least the A,B,C, and D models.  Who knows about the shaft models, and the "Classic" had fuel injection...

I suspect those extra tubes are used as a place to secure the carburetor float boal vent hoses.  On the 1978 model the cab vent hoses just pass over the air box and into the space near the silencer, but they don't attach to anything.  They are just left dangling under the seat.   Maybe someone thought that didn't look very tidy, so they decided to clean it up by proving a place to put the end of those vent hoses?
