Most ultrasonic cleaning cycle times are way too short to have a detrimental effect on the parts being cleaned. However, if certain types of parts are placed in ultrasonic cleaners and left there for too long, cavitation erosion will begin to occur.

<<The garage test for ultrasonics, putting a piece of aluminum foil in the tank, causes holes through the foil in short order.>>

What parts of a motorcycle carb are as thin as aluminum foil?
This isn't a real question, it's snark.  The point is that if the sonic effect will punch holes in foil, it will erode the surface of the soft aluminum part you are cleaning.  Best to limit time, but then, how long for the vibrating bubbles to clean the passages deep inside the carb body?

Had this RS34 rack assembly (and bowls) done professionally after the jets, slides, etc. were removed.  The misc. loose parts I cleaned by hand.

While not "quite" as thin as foil Chopper, brass floats can easily be pin holed by an ultrasonic cleaner. I've seen it over and over, the over exuberance and expectations of using these machines. While a proper machine will do a remarkable job of knocking off the crap it also exposes all the compromised Zinc. Resulting in a quickly rusting mess once the water dries and flash rust begins. Have also experienced the carb bodies will begin to oxidize, white patches. As mentioned by previous fellas, have to use the correct chemicals, correct heat settings or you'll have a finished product that looks worse then when you started. I own two, a small and big one. Rarely ever use either, especially when it comes to carb work.

Careful, active ultrasonic cleaning in (NLA) Yamaha Carb Dip Cleaner enabled us to make this:

No other passive cleaning process came close, regardless of chemistry used.
