When one clamp doesn't keep the pod(s) on anymore...

Isn't that second clamp past the end of the carb and actually pulling the filter off the carb spigot ??

The added clamp (element side) is snugged just enough to align the bands. 
The purpose is simply to keep the front clamp in it's intended position, preventing it from sliding back...which essentially is what pushes the filter off the carburetor.

I didn't need a new filter set after all!

I only ask because in your picture the filter isn't "fully seated" on the carb

The rubber became distorted from countless removals and decades of abuse.

One dropped off during a recent ride.  Found it later in the air box well, and thus inspired my latest improvisation...one that actually works!

That is one of the reasons I prefer APE filters. The mounting flange is a better design and they use a wider clamp.
K&N on top, APE below.

Now, these old K&N filters seat fully over each carb flange and secure with one clamp.

This Summer I decided to try out my old K&N pods to see how my motor would react.

Well, the air box ended up in a cardboard box, and I've been a crazy jet swapping scooter ever since.

Nice having open access behind the carbs for a change.


Results with current jetting:


Main:  125 (1&4), 132.5 (2&3)
Pilot:  25
Pilot Air:  0.9
Clips:  3rd. Slot
Fuel Screws:  1/8-1/4

Compression:  180 psi x4

Plugs look nice, but the difference in mains is pretty crazy.

Yes sir, it is. 
1 & 4 have been dark from the start after the top-end Wiseco fiasco last Winter, but 4 especially so.  Seems to be getting better though, despite her continual thirst for 10W-40 oil.
Hopefully that improves over time, and with heavier oil, next change.
I do love to wind her up a lot, so some loss must happen with that.
