I bought a kz440 with 8000 miles and brand new carbs a few months back, stored it, and just got it back out. Gas is leaking (enough to notice the tubes are wet) and the intake boots are cracked.

I have both the clymer and haynes manuals, and they include instructions on how to adjust the float levels, but 1. where do I get the fuel level gauge and 2. any misc tips before I tackle this?

Also, for the life of me I can't find new intake boots anywhere online but ebay, anyone know where to get them/what the part# is?

The bike is an absolute blast to ride, and accelerates smoothy, but I only get about 38-39 mpg. blech.

You can get the new intake boots right from powersportspro.com, $25.00 each, I just got mine! As for actually working on the carbs, I dont know, I found a carb shop That mine is going into first of the week:side:

Look under factory parts, then look under cylinder heads for your model!

You can easily make your own fuel level guage by using some clear vinyl tubing and a straight connector that will connect the vinyl tube to your float bowl drain tube.

After it is connected, hold the clear tube up against the float bowl body and open up the drain screw at the bottom of the bowl. You may also need to turn your petcock to Prime to allow the gas to flow into the bowl freely until the float valve stops it.

You will see the fuel level in the clear tube. If set correctly, the fuel level should come to rest at 3-5mm (if I'm remembering correctly) below where the top of the float bowl and bottom of the carb body meet.

The bike is an absolute blast to ride, and accelerates smoothy, but I only get about 38-39 mpg. blech.


I have the same bike, and I was getting even worse mileage (about 33mpg). After doing a thorough cleaning of the carbs, adjusting the valve clearances, changing the plugs and plug wires, and doing the coil relay mod, it improved to about 45 mpg. Not as much as I had hoped for, but it runs great now.
