No sealant is needed. Be sure to use the CORRECT washers when installing the petcock. The correct ones are made of nylon so they do not leak. Ed

Thank you 650ed!Are those the washers that are listed in the parts diagram? The only reason I ask is that the washers that are on there now are metal. Thanks!

If you noticed item 11 in Ed's diagram you will see an o ring that sits between the petcock and your tank.
I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

The few petcocks I have messed with had plastic (nylon?) washers, but I bet a soft aluminum or copper washer could seal there as well, much like an oil drain bolt.

A good hardware store may have nylon washers. There's one near me. I don't know what HD or Lowes would have.
Also, if you need the big o-ring, a metric nitrile o-ring kit has a couple of sizes that should work. It's what I used, since I
already had the kit. It takes some manual dexterity to fit a round o-ring into an oblong hole, but it was easy.

You could use a couple dabs of grease in the groove to retain it long enough till it gets tightened against the tank.

Good suggestion, but grease might not hold that o-ring in place. It's kind of big n fat.
With everything dry, it was pretty easy. w grease, maybe not. ???

I have used oring with washer when I not have had the nylon washer.
1981 KZ650-D4, with 1981 z750L engine (Wiensco 810 big bore).
