Bowserpup32 wrote: Thank you so much. Extremely helpful. Just one last question. The dimensions you are stating....are they OD or ID??

The bore dimensions on the engine size are INSIDE as I did mention in my earlier reply and also as others have shown.
MIKAW's pic shows 28's.
The pod size you need is 44mm ID to fit the 44mm OD where the original airbox tubes mounted.

Ok. Went out and bought a digital caliper reader. Harbor freight. $9. Awesome. They measure 26.5 ID. This means I have VM26 carbs. Just wanted to ensure the VM is accurate and they are not referred to by another name. In short they are Mikuni VM 26 carbs. If someone can just confirm for me. Your guys are awesome!!! Thank yuh!!

Zed1015... Maybe you and the others could show us the different examples of carbs type... I'm new to them also and don't understand the various types, for example Smooth Bore, Flat side. VM, I've seen "SS" behind the VM26... It would be of great value to me... Thank you...

On the early Z1's with 28mm Mikunis and carb tops held on with two screws these were designated VM28SC and are very different to the VM's.
The later carbs on Z900 and Z1000 with three bolt tops are VM26 and VM28.
The SS stands for special set and means a carb or bank of carbs that were produced already set up and jetted for a particular application or model but otherwise are just plain VM's.
Flat slides like their name suggest have a flat ( guillotine ) slide rather than a round slide.
VM Smooth bores are a performance carb aimed at performance applications and racing and have a smoother venturi for less turbulence but have a separate jet block in the venturi which actually causes turbulence at low speeds (not by design) which makes them tricky to set up for low speed running.
These are externally almost identical to stock VM's with many interchangeable parts and can only be identified on the bike by a small square casting on the side of the body and slightly different air bleed positions in the mouth of the carb..
They also already have the adjustable air corrector jet feature as standard but at 6 o'clock in the mouth of the carb and also of a smaller 4mm thread .

There are a couple of good sites for Mikuni vintage carburetors. I like this one.

www.wgcarbs.com/
I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

The VM29's are smoothbores.
Personally I think they are overrated, especially for their age and not worth some of the daft prices people are asking just because they are "VINTAGE".
For the same money you can buy a brand new set of performance carbs.
A set of VM26 or VM28's bored out to 29 or 30mm will out perform the 29 smoothies because they do not have the jet block disrupting the air flow.

All great info, Thank you all very much... Good to here you feel a set of VM26SS, (Wink Wink, I feel comfortable using that because now I know what all the jargon means) Bored out are a good choice over 29's. I recently purchased such a set for another member here the end of last year... Plans are not final yet but they will be going on a future build... I'm sure I will have enough parts left after I finish the '76 900A4 build to throw a custom bike together. Should only incur the cost of the engine build, Some powder coating and a good set of rear set from Les. I do know it will be Blacked out, with blue ghost flames...

THANKS AGAIN

Got a question for y’all, I have a 74 Z1 and I want to install pod air filters. Does anyone offer one where you can still use the stock side covers? Thank for the help.

Any cone style will fit with the side panels.
Be sure to use good quality filters such as K&N, S&B , APE etc.
Cheap Emgo's etc can restrict performance.
Refer to this thread regarding a cure for low end fueling problems caused by removing the airbox.

Thanks, I plan to get K&N filters but I’m wanting to keep the stock side covers so I’m looking for filters that will allow me to do that
