I recently bought a 1982 KZ1000 LTD that looks good but does not run. I've narrowed the problem down to the carbs, and am asking for some help in rebuilding them.

I've rebuit many of the slide-type carbs and some of the CV's, but these pose some questions.

1. How do I get to the pilot jets? There is an aluminum cap over the area where they are located.

2. What would be the right jets for these carbs if they were bone stock?

3. The bike is stock except for K&N' pod filters. What jetting changes are needed for them?

thanks
David

Carb Type: Printed on the side of the carb is 1358 F131

Size approximately 34mm (1.320") inside diameter on the downstream side

I have two sets of carbs, both that appear stock and needs rebuilding and cleaning.

lots of stuff in archives if you use search. also check out wired george web site. search n forum will find easily.

IMO these are easier to work on than the MIC mehanical venturi

you'll need to pull the cap off the idle mixture screw and heat the carb body around the screw to soften the loctite so you can get the screw out. You'll know its hot enough wen you see the loctite 'move'. Apply heat quickly so as not to heat up plastic and rubber parts elsewhere on carb.

i've messed with a mess of these. the O-ring will be rotten or dried out, depending on how long it's been since it had as in it.

put pods on my gs1000, same carbs bs34. moved needle up about a notch worth using spacers and went up one size on jets.

go to wired george web site and ask WG for best/latest info.

Duck,

I've taken off the plugs and the pilots are gooey. I can blow them out OK with cleaner and will also do the main jets and needle jets.

Do I need to put the plugs back on the bike? I'm running with K&N's and perhaps this will give me a little bit more fuel down low. What do you think?

There's a big o-ring (maybe 3/8") on the bowl gasket which needs to be replaced.

Beyond that I"m just cleaning and reassembling.

Once apart, you may as well clean the jets.
Go to wired george's web site.
There are many small holes in the side of the needle jet and the main jet emulsion tube. The need to be clean,

The pilot jet will not meter properly unless the cap is over it.

The low speed needle will need a new O-ring.

You can go to my web site if you ain't using Mozilla bhwhahahaha

The BS34s on your 82 need to have the plug reinstalled using the correct oring as the oring is what keeps the plug in place. These carbs have the pilot jet pick up gas via a cross passage to the main jet well. If the plug isn't in place, they will run rich. If you have pods, rejetting IS required. The bike won't start with stock pilot jets. I would go with #40 pilots and #140 mains. The jet needles are not re-clip type and work OK with no shimming. The OEM jetting is #37.5 pilots and #122.5 mains. If your pilots were gummy, the carbs really should be totally disassembled and soaked in carb dip. The passageways ARE gummed.
