Quick jetting question for Mikuni 29s

I've done a lot of reading on here and am thinking my carbs were overjetted. I rode this bike for just a few minutes after I bought it and then tore it down for the build. It had been sitting for a long time but ran ok and had good power. The engine looked like a 40k engine, but the plugs were completely carboned up. I just got into the carbs yesterday and discovered they are VM29s, but have 127.5 main jets. Pilots appear to be 20. I'll be running pods and a 4 to 1 pipe. I believe the engine is stock. Cold compression was 107 to 120 FYI. Location is KC, so not high elevation. Any thoughts?

BTW, it's a 79 KZ1000.

Way rich on the mains, mine are at 120, pilots are Ok at 20, I have the needle clips written down some where but cant find them. I believe its one clip down from the center {needle raised 1 clip} Air screw is out about 1/8 turn. That will get you closer then you are anyway but also synch the carbs

Thanks for the reply. I checked one needle and the clip was in the middle. On further inspection, those 127.5 jets weren't all identical either. No clue where the previous owner scrounged them up. I went ahead and ordered 120 mains and new 20 pilots.

+1 on these recommendations. You should be close with these settings.

However, those compression numbers are not ideal. Have you checked your valve clearances recently? Does the bike consume very much oil?

I just bought the bike as a project. The compression test was done cold. I did reshim the valves when I had the motor apart. A couple had basically no clearance. I'll hopefully have it together by the end of May. If it runs alright I'll do a good compression test warm. It has 40k on the motor and it is ready for a refresh. Gonna ride it this summer and hopefully rebuild the motor next winter.

Thanks for the reply.
