Need help working on some carbs.
25 Feb 2012 06:13
I have A 1980 Kz550 c1 with a 4 to 1 exhaust. I need to know what kind of carbs I have and what size of jets I need to go up to so I can stop the popping and crackling on my deceleration. If anyone can help me I 'd really appreciate it.

What are you using for air filtration?

25 Feb 2012 11:18 - 25 Feb 2012 11:31Likely the stock manual-slide carbs, and not CV carbs.Roca wrote: I have A 1980 Kz550 c1 with a 4 to 1 exhaust. On each carb will probably be a side-located pilot air screw that governs the amount of air allowed into the pilot circuit.
The screw has a pointed tip that goes into an airway passage.
Turning the screw in clockwise puts more and more of the pointed tip into the airway, thereby gradually lessening the amount of air allowed, which enrichens the pilot circuit.
Popping on deceleration may result from a too lean carb pilot circuit.
Could try turning each pilot air screw IN, say 1/4 turn, to slightly enrich the pilot circuits, and test run the bike for effect.

Carb tuning with the pilot air screws presupposes truly clean pilot circuits, and no air leaks.
For example, if turning the pilot air screw has no noticeable effect on engine idle rpm, there's likely something wrong inside the carb.

Good reply Patton.
Also, always check for exhaust leaks when you get popping on decell. It will be a different sound than if the cause was from the intake side, but a popping non the less.

Was bike acquired with pods already installed?
Perhaps larger pilot jets have already been installed.
Or was air-box (with no popping on decel) replaced with pods which then produced popping on decel?

Rocca, if your 550 still has the stock carbs on it, they are TK or Telkei 22 carbs and not Mikuni carbs used on other KZ bikes. The TKs have some differences from the Mikuni carbs, I would suggest that you check out this very good site done by Lou D (loudhvx)
home.comcast.net/~loudgpz/GPZweb/TK22mainPage/TK22mainPage.html
where he has a set of pages all about these carbs.
IIRC it is almost impossible to find larger pilot jets for the TK carbs. If you need larger ones you may have to drill them. But the link has lots of great info that should prove to be helpful to you.

It came with the pods. Everything has been capped off. The reed valves are shut with electrical tape, but I am going to get some oil breather filters to put on them. I think looks cool. I'll post a pic in just a minute.
