A complete kz 1000 or 900 engine just sold on ebay for 300.00 and came with a set of 29mm smoothbores. type "spare kz1000 engine" into search and check completed listing option on the left side and check pics. I think it ended on or about the 12th of Feb. I didn't have the spare $$$$ to bid. shipping would have been from washington state. But a great deal..

Orrrr, I could get a dynojet kit for my BS34's. I may go this route.

26mm or 28mm carbs from a KZ900/KZ1000 would work very well. 26's are a little small for the 900/1000 engines, but 810cc is 10% smaller - and would run very well - you'd have good throttle response through the lower mid-range - something you'd lose with bigger carbs. VM29's or CR29's would be a great choice - if money is no object. Anything larger is really too much carb on the street. Racing I would probably change that answer...

Jeff, I actually had a question about VM26/28's. I'm sure you have the answer. How can you tell the difference? Which came on what?

Do all the 79/80's have 28mm carbs? Is there an easy way to tell the difference?

From what I've been able to gather:

73-75 Z1 had 28's w/out accel pump.
76-78 Kz900/1000 had 26's, some with, some w/out accel pump.
79-80 Kz1000 had 28's w/accel pump.

The 26 and 28mm carbs with accel pumps are very similar. The 29's had an extra hole in the intake bell.

please correct me if I'm wrong.

the easiest way to tell - measure the ID on the engine side - 26mm will measure around 26.7mm, 28mm carbs measure around 28.8mm

Z1's used an earlier VM28 carb - easily distinguished by the angular top held on with just 2 screws.

KZ900 and most of the 77-78 KZ1000's used 26mm carbs - only the Z1R used 28mm carbs. None of these used accelerator pumps - and all had adjustable needles with 5 clip settings.

It gets a little more confusing in 79/80. The A model, the Z1R and the shaft bikes all used 28mm carbs. The 79 LTD used 26mm carbs - I'm not 100% sure on the 80 LTD or the police bikes.
