79 KZ1000 swapping 28mm Mikuni carbs for 26mm ones

I have a 79 KZ1000st. The stock 28mm carbs are pretty dirty and need a good cleaning. I can get my hands on a nice, clean set of Mikuni 26mm carbs for a good price. My current mods are k&n air cleaners, and 4 into 1 exhaust. My future mods are Dyna ignition, Dyna coil, Dyna wires. Wanted to know if these carbs will work, and work well for a daily driver? I'm still learning and don't know much about motorcycles and the carbs. Thanks for your help in advance.

Yes, the 26mm carbs are quite good daily driver carbs. They won't flow as much on the top end due to the smaller diameter bore, but easy to use and work on, imo.

What would you want for your 28's?

As long as they're not the non-adjustable 26's off a '77. Mine came with those and we ditched 'em for older 28's off a Z1. We couldn't get the stock 26's to run right with my pipe and K&N's.

They had the adjustments (can't remember which ones) blocked due to emissions regs. There may be a way to un-block 'em but we took what we saw as the easier way out! ;)

Come to find out the seller also had a set of 28mm sonic cleaned for sell. $50 more than what I wanted to spend, but I went ahead and purchased them. When I get the carbs, and put them on and if all is good, I will be selling my 28mm carbs. They have a stage on jet kit, run pretty well, but I put bad gas in them about about a year ago and they haven't been right since. I ran seafoam Through them and the seafoam got the bike started and running ok, but didn't wanna fool with those carbs anymore and just bought a already clean set.

With your mods, these carbs will need to be jetted for your bike. If your original carbs were dialed into your bike before they were fouled, that is a good starting point to what you need in this "new" set of 28s. With pods and a good exhaust you would usually go with Stage 3 settings.
