How can you tell what carbs you have?
24 Nov 2011 00:23
So I bought a set of carbs off fleebay and I assume they are 34mm. I measured the boot side and got 33.7mm How can you go about telling for sure? I really can't find any numbers or anything on the carbs.
The guy I bought them from said they were in working condition and came off of a running bike (1980 Kz1000)and might need a light cleaning. I took them apart and the floats were mostly stuck and the slides did not move until I freed them up. There was a gummy fuel residue all over them and he must not of completely drained before shipping them as there was leakage all of the packaging. Another bad feebayer.

Not the best picture, but sure looks like Mikuni BS34"s. Good Carb for a More or less stock street engine. Parts are pretty easy to get, plenty of jets etc. With the Diaphragm slide, it needs a good steady signal through the Whole carb, so an Airbox is Best. Although some do tune them to run with pod's.

I was wanting to run pods and I expected the carbs to be in better shape then they are. I have a set of 29mm smoothbores that came on the bike but I don't know what all if anything that they will need to work properly. Just wondering what would work best and the cheapest. I know the 29's look awesome on there with the pods.

You want to Run those Smooth Bores. Don't put the money into the BS34's for your build. Shouldn't be to difficult to fix up the Smooth Bores and that will be money well spent. Worst they might have a cracked jet block. If so send a PM to Testorossa. He has fixed a few, I believe.

Ok, I figured that much. Plus those 29's just look the shit. Well I guess I'll keep the 34's as a backup or clean them up and resell them.
My engine is not stock as it is a J motor with 1100 heads with a Vance And Hines 4 into 1. I have no clue what else has been done to it. Will the 29's be better than the 34's for this application and for most applications other than stock?

Most any of th KZR guys would trade a testicle for those Carbs. The BS34's are a good stock motor street Karb. But for what you have those Smoothies will be the go! Get them in top shape, you will be glad you did it.
