Glowing pipe

I noticed something last night, when I got off work I started my bike, turned the choke on and let it run for a bit and I noticed that my #1 exhaust was glowing as red as the sun. Now would that be cause the carb is running to rich? Plus, I have my idle set at 1000 rpm but when I ride and the bike heats up it idles around 1500 rpm. Why? Some insight would be greatly appreciated.

Your lean on the red side. Air leaks cause that and idle irregularities.

Too lean. Pull the plug and see if it's white. Ed

Guessing 1980 KZ1000.

Including information about bike year and model usually elicits better responses.
And it's easy to put the information in your signature where it will automatically appear in posted messages.
When done, the signature information appears in all posts, past and future. :cheer:
And may be changed as often as desired.

In addition to the other suggestions, would assure ignition timing is correct and that the advancer is properly functioning.
And that spark plugs are correct NGKB8ES, properly gapped.

Good Fortune! :)

try spraying wd40 all around the intake rubbres while its running. listen to hear if the idle rpm changes. a change would indicate an air leak . a leak will make it run lean and hot.
