Idle Screw

11 Oct 2011 00:56
#482488
I have a '79 KZ400 H1 (just acquired it 2 weeks ago) and I have been having trouble with a loose idle screw. The vibrations of my bike loosen it up and mess with my idling. Is there anything I can do to remedy this?

Thanks!

Are you referring to the idle speed adjustment knob? If so, there should be a spring on the screw/bolt that (I believe) is what should be holding that in place.

EDIT: Looks like your setup doesn't have an idle speed adjustment like some of the bigger bikes have. What "idle screw" are you referring to?

Yes, it is located right next to the choke lever. It adjust the idle speed. Yesterday it kept loosening and today it kept getting tighter and raising my idle speed.

She's being very temperamental, especially when she's sat overnight.

Maybe a drop of the Blue Loctite #242 is what you need. Never use any of the Red loctites as they need about 300 F to loosen their grip. #242 is available at auto parts stores and at Wal-Mart in the auto checmical section.

+1 from me too. I was going to suggest the same thing. :)

What I did with mine was use a hole punch to punch out a few small disks from an old tire tube, punch a hole in the middle and slide it on the screw. Kept things right where I left them.

Are parts 2, 3 and 4 present and accounted for?

Perhaps the spring has weakened?

Maybe it's the wrong spring?

Good Fortune! :)

+1 remove and check spring, may be rusted to worthlessness.

OK then #15 is the spring for the throttle adjustment, with the cable adjustment mechanism, #13, having the threaded end and the threads in the left carb body being in question. Are the threads all right, will it adjust but not hold? Maybe this spring is shot, #15.
