Which Needle Valves ???
06 Oct 2011 23:39 - 06 Oct 2011 23:41
Looking to rebuild my Mikuni Smoothbore 29s. When looking for parts I am given a choice of a 2.5 or a 2.8 Needle Valve Assy. Anyone know which one I should choose ? Stock engine as far as I know, running the 29s, PODs and a 4-into-1 header. Any recommendations on where to buy parts for the Mikunis, not having any luck with anyone offering a rebuild kit. Thanks in advance for your help.

There are no 'prebuilt' rebuild kits. Mikuni sold these carbs for too many different applications to have a 'one size fits all' kit.
We do have all the typical serviceable parts in stock. Most times the float bowl gaskets and float needle valve assemblies are all you need - although if the carbs have been sitting a long time you may have to replace the 12 o-rings on the fuel T and fuel rails.

I looked at the parts you have available for the Smoothbore Mikuni 29s on your website. You have a 2.5 needle valve assy (seat, washer & needle). Other websites have listed a 2.8 needle valve assy in addition to a 2.5 . Can you tell me the difference in the 2.5 vs 2.8 ? As far as I know, my engine is stock, other than the Mikuni 29s & a 4 into 1 header. Will the 2.5 work for me or do I need a 2.8 ?? Thanks for any help you can offer.

If your engine is stock, then a larger float needle valve should not be needed. If you look at yours there will be a stamping of the size, most likely 2.5
There is a direct correlation between jet sizes and the size of the float valve. then it is also different if you had a pressure feed system.
I think you would order whats in your carbs already, 2.5

We don't list the 2.8 n/v as there's really no application for them in 29mm smoothbores. 2.5 is the hole size in the seat that allows fuel into the float bowl. Anything up to 1100cc the 2.5 opening is the best choice. And once you get over 1100cc the 29mm smoothbores are too small anyway...
