vm29 needle adjustment

I have a 78 kz1000 with vm29's. Need help with the basics of carb tuning-how do I get to the jet needle to adjust it. All my plugs are black!
77 kz1000
2001 Aprilla SL1000

The jet needle clip position is one of the last things I would address toward resolving a sooty plug issue. As several other conditions are imo more likely suspects.
