Cleaning Service Review
16 Aug 2011 01:21 - 16 Aug 2011 01:30Since I'm getting lazy in my old age I decided to have the carbs off the 78 KZ1000 I just bought ultrasonically cleaned at a local dealer today. I have to say I'm pleased with the results. It only took about 1/2 an hour and cost me $36.00. Compared to the old way of spraying tons of carb cleaner and scrubbing this is the way to go. Here are the before pics.

Here are the after pics they work like butter and I put in new pilot jets I bought from Z-1 Ent. I'm planning on installing them in the morning and hoping this beast will run like it should.

So, that shop had a big ultrasonic cleaner? For US$36, I'd drop mine off too!

Michael, yes they had one large enough to hold the entire rack of carbs. I removed all the jets, slides etc. but left the rack together.
Roy, are you buying? You need some more inventory, I've still got a 79 650 Custom I can sell ya.

Looks good. Ultrasonic is really the way to go for carbs these days. The good carb dip isn't available to the consumer any more. I have tried the new Berrymans and mineral spirits. Both have left gunk that my ultrasonic just blasts away. I'm so convinced now that I won't even waste my time with the chemical stuff any more. I do still blast through the passages with an aerosol can followed by compressed air to verify flow, but that's it.

Is there anyone in our neck of the woods that does this? I am very very disallusioned with the caliber and quality of aftermarket motorcycle workmanship in the greater Houston area.

I'm not sure if there is anyone locally who does this. I have my own which is generally large enough to do one carb at a time. I would be happy to help out any local members with carb cleaning on the basis that we can agree on a fair price and no one is in a terrible hurry. Any rush jobs would have to be previously discussed.

Whatever you do, don't use "Super Clean" or "Purple Power" UNDILUTED and try to clean anything with an anodized finish. I thought, "If an ultrasonic cleaner works really good, and a degreaser works really good, lets put them together!" I think Reese's had a great idea with putting my chocolate in your peanut butter, so I gave it a try.
Next time I'm going either stick with water, or do like Peter1958 is doing, I'm going to ask first! I picked up my ultrasonic cleaner at Harbor Freight. It's just a wee one, but I thought I'd give it a try. I'd LOVE to see what a big professional model can do. Thanks Gringo for showing your pics. Next time, it is definitely the way I'm going.
