Ran into a problem with my 77 kz 650b1
22 Jul 2009 00:48
I have been fiddling around with my 650 the last few days getting it read to ride. I went out today, and found out the stock origanol petcock is toast. I was going to buy the cheap one from z1 enterprises, but then i got to thinking that you get what you pay for. So im going up to the kawi shop tommorow, and im going to order a new petcock. Acording to babbits-online.com, it's 65 dollars and some change, a little steep but it is a kawasaki nos part. I figured, if i spend the extra money now, it will eliminate any problems in the near future. I am also going to look into getting a battery there to, since the ones i usually get from wal-mart, seem to need replacing every year.

"ordering a new OEM petcock"...
Wise choice young man!
There's a posting on the cheapo Bikers choice units, Jeff had replied where bad gaskets where the cause of leaking petcocks. In my case, from the moment I installed it, it wouldn't completely shut off the fuel flow... Not good!
Henceforth, get out stumpy the magic wallet and purchased a Pingel.... Damn these units are nice....
BTW, $65 for a good petcock is cheap...
Price the Pingel units sometime and you'll see what I mean...

Ya......so i went to the bike shop today, and of course the 1977 kz 650 b1 betcock has been discontinued........grrrr. So im going to plan b, i ordered a 3/8 npt 44mm adapter plate from feff at z1. Then i ordered a drag specialties early style chrome petcock from dennis kirk, it is for an early harly tank, but will fit the 3/8 npt. I had a drag specialties petcock on my 1972 sportster before i got rid of it and it worked great (the petcock not the bike.........lol).

well, i cancled my order today, i ended up ordering a pengel petcock and addapter plate from the kawi shop, i had a uneasy feeling about getting a cheepo petcock. The petcock was originally 100 dollars, but since im friends with the guy at the parts counter i got it for 75 dollars, and the adapter plate is usually 32 dollars and i gotit for 18........................sweet.

If your petcock is not a vacuum one wouldn't o-rings be cheaper. On my 77 650 new metric o-rings did the trick.

ya i have a gravity fed petcock, but it looked like it was jb welded back together at some point or another. I figured a new pingel would do the trick and give me peace of mind for a long time.
