Pods Question
08 Oct 2008 22:21
Have 1000ltd B3, have seen a lot of pics of bikes with individual pod filters on the carbs. Does this modification make a noticeable increase in power? I am assuming a rejet if this actually flows more air. or does it just open up some real estate under the seat?
thanks

It is supposed to add power how much? Who knows. It will give you tons more room and make it easier to work on the carbs. You will need to rejet up a couple of sizes. Is it worth it? Some say it is some say it isn't. If the bike is original I would keep the box.

Pods sound and look great IMO and really make it a lot easier to assemble/disassembe carbs. Some say that they won´t work perfectly with CV-carbs due to less vacuum on low RPM.

Re: Pods Question

I've had a hard time finding the exact jetting needed to tame my high-flow pods..
I've enlisted the help of a career mechanic and long-time Kaw guy, and he claims that pods are hard to jet correctly.
MANY hours of tuning seems to even out the mixture a bit, but I might actually end up putting my airbox back on and using an aftermarket high-flow airbox filter.
I know you can get them for newer bikes, never looked for one for an old KZ.

Are pods worthwhile? That question has as many answers as there are guys turning wrenches, some love them and some hate them, I've found very few opinions that lie somewhere in the middle ground....
That being said, I'll never run anything but pods on my old Kaws. The tuning hasn't been an issue for me, I enjoy turning wrenches and don't mind the 15 minutes it takes to pull the carbs off and rejet them.
I've also never had an issue with my pods pulling air funny in a side wind or sucking water in the rain. I don't park it outside in the rain so I don't worry about them filling up with water when parked.
I love the sound of the free flowing intake and while I've never done a dyno comparison to tell you exactly how much extra power they produce, the K&N pods I'm running now definitely give more pop than the stock air box, and more airflow/power than the el cheapo Emgo pods I used to run.
Are pods right for you? Only you can answer that question. Do you struggle to tune carbs now? If so I'd probably stay away from pods, because if you're not up to snuff with carb tuning you'll get frustrated in a hurry with tuning the carbs for pods.

Thanks for all the replys, I cant say yet how good I will be at tuning, still in the middle of a frame up resto. I have some basic understanding of carbs and have had a bit of experience tuning old 2 stroke Yamaha Enduros. I may not mess with the motor until I get it all back together and on the road. It starts and runs ok for now. Since it looks like an early winter, Snowed here today, that may not be till next spring.
Till then I will just hang out with all you KZ guru's and absorb all the info I can.
