Chemical used in heated sonic cleaner?
12 Aug 2008 16:28
I have access to a heated sonic cleaner for as long as I want. It's a nice commercial unit. After removing all plastic/rubber components what kind of cleaning solution is best for this purpose. What is used to make them look nice on the outside too. Thanks in advance.

They used to use 1.1.1. trichlorethylene, similar to dry cleaning fluid as it left no residue on the parts. The EPA mandated it not be used and more due to Ozone depletion worries.
I'm not sure what is being used know but if you google Branson ultasonic cleaners the information should be found.

It's not ozone depletion that is the problem, it's more because it's toxic
Check this out:
LINK
.
Check this out:
1,1,1-TRICHLOROETHANE
PHYSICAL STATE; APPEARANCE:
COLOURLESS LIQUID , WITH CHARACTERISTIC ODOUR.
PHYSICAL DANGERS:
The vapour is heavier than air.
CHEMICAL DANGERS:
The substance decomposes on heating or on burning producing toxic and corrosive fumes including phosgene and hydrogen chloride. Reacts violently with aluminium, manganese and their alloys, alkalis, strong oxidants, acetone and zinc. Attacks natural rubber. Mixtures of 1,1,1-trichloroethane with potassium or its alloys are shock sensitive. Reacts slowly with water releasing corrosive hydrochloric acid.
OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS (OELs):
TLV: 350 ppm; 1910 mg/m3 (as TWA); 450 ppm; 2460 mg/m3 (as STEL) (ACGIH 1994-1995).
ROUTES OF EXPOSURE:
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation of its vapour and by ingestion.
INHALATION RISK:
A harmful contamination of the air can be reached rather quickly on evaporation of this substance at 20C.
EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:
The substance irritates the eyes, the skin and the respiratory tract. The substance may cause effects on the heart and central nervous system, kidneys and liver , resulting in cardiac disorders and respiratory failure. Exposure at high level may result in death. Medical observation is indicated.
EFFECTS OF LONG-TERM OR REPEATED EXPOSURE:
The liquid defats the skin. The substance may have effects on the liver.

Back in the bad old 80's we used this stuff to vapor clean aerospace parts(pc boards, missile parts) sure did a good job too. I wonder how many co-workers have died from rare cancers/tumors after exposure to this stuff!

I guess I left out that whatever it is, I'd like to be around afterwards to appreciate it. Are there any safe(r) chemicals out there?
