So I bought the K&N style filters for my 650. However since I have never worked on a bike before I don't want to screw anything up and that air filter assembly seems to be in there really well.

Wondering if I can get some help here. I need a diagram or a step by step on how to get that thing out of the way. Some one out there got a link or a picture I can look at or preferably a step by step.

Thanks.

The stock air box is a real bugger to get out. The last one I did, I needed to take the engine out before I could get just the air box out. I did it before, years ago, and don't recall needin to go to that extream.

You will need to remove the carbs though, which can be a pain in itself. A manual would be a big help.
To remove the carbs, you'll have to disconnect the throttle cables, gas lines (and tank, makes it easier).

Gonna scan the carb removal steps.

Once the carbs are out, you can then get the airbox out.

If you remove the 4 Carb tubes (parts 9 and 10) from the airbox, then you shouldn't need to remove the engine. ;)
Remove the two screws and brackets from either side of the airbox (parts 12 and 17), Cap (part 5), and breathers; parts 14 and 13.
You should then be able to wiggle the airbox out.

You'll want to get a crankcase breather filter for where you removed part 14.

Rejet and reinstall your carbs. Put on your new individual K&N filters.

Or you can always buy a single K&N filter to replace your stock filter and forget about removing the airbox all together. Works better in the rain, where as the exposed filters will soak up the water.
Also strong breezes/crosswinds can bog down your engine with individual filters on.

I used to have pod filters for many years, but switched back to the stock airbox again and prefer it.

Along with removing the carbs, if you also remove the battery box and associated electrical mounting brackets, it will free up quite a bit of room and you will be able to "wiggle" the airbox out of the frame much easier.

Been there, done that. ;)

Thanks for the help guys. I bought these filters thinking it might be a cool little "upgrade" that might not be so hard. But from the looks of it I have a nice long weekend in front of me.

Guess that's what I get for thinking...
