Hey folks!

I'm having a hell of a time taking my carbs apart... I can't get the slides out. The carbs sat with gas in them for about 28 years, and are in pitiful condition. I managed to get one of the slides out, but it was a traumatic experience for the carb! hehe The gas varnish made it stick to the wall of the carb, and there was some disimilar metal corrosion. The other carbs appear worse off. I've tried soaking them in the expensive gallon bucket of carb cleaner I bought... useless. I've tried penetrating oil... no luck. The only succes I had was using a large pry tool (screwdriver!), but as you can imagine, that left some damage that I'll have to polish out... the other carbs don't have enough room to get the head of the screwdriver under.

My next course of action is to soak them in a bucket of ATF. I can't leave them in the carb solution because it eats the aluminum.

Please.... you people that have brought these old bikes to life... throw me a bone before I take my sledgehammer to the damn things!

Cheers...

Place the carbs upside down and spray some carb cleaner on the slides. The carb cleaner will work its way down the slide and soften up the gunk holding them stuck. You will probably need to repeat it a few times and spray the carb cleaner on both sides of the slide.

I've had the best luck removing stuck slides by heating up the bodies of the carbs in the area of the slides with a propane torch. Take out the little plungers for the choke though because you don't want to chance melting the rubber cap or the plastic. Don't use anymore heat than necessary but this has worked when all else has failed.

Oops, forgot to say thanks and WG, I'm in Harlingen, TX now, near the border, but in about 2 months I'll be moving to the San Antonio area.

I already regret not sending these carbs to you. Just didn't have the cash on hand to do it. :-D Oh well... it's a learning experience, right?

Cheers

Glad to see it worked out for you Wolf. BTW I love the nickname "Corrosion Queen" you chose for your bike. Sort of like the big sister to my "Brillo pad special", just keep at it, the 900 LTD was always one of my favorite bikes from days past. Take your time and do it right and you will wind up with a bike you can enjoy for the rest of your riding days.
